Privacy at East Moment

Participation should make the site more human, not turn readers into a data product. East Moment collects only what each interaction needs.

Topic follows

When you follow topics, East Moment stores your email, optional display name, selected interests, consent time and the page where you joined. A new subscription remains pending until you confirm it by email. Confirmation and unsubscribe links contain a signed one-way email hash, never your raw address. This information is used only for relevant East Moment editorial updates.

Email delivery

East Moment uses Resend to deliver confirmation, welcome, moderation and editorial emails. Resend receives the destination address and the email content required for delivery.

Community accounts and sign-in

You may create a community account with a public name or alias and a private email address. East Moment stores the account record, a one-way email hash, one-time login-token hashes, session-token hashes, request and completion times, account status and the public profile details you choose to add. The raw sign-in token is used only in the email link; it expires after 15 minutes and cannot be used twice.

East Moment uses these protected server records to provide passwordless sign-in, show your own profile and activity, reduce repeated form entry, prevent abuse and measure whether readers successfully move from requesting a link to participating. The private admin funnel reports aggregate 7-day and 30-day counts for requests, completed sign-ins, first topic follows, comments, Moment drafts or submissions and returning signed-in members. Internal and editorial identities are excluded. The funnel does not store raw IP addresses, full referrer URLs, cookies, email contents or form contents.

Why information is used

Information is used to provide the interaction you request, authenticate members, review and publish contributions, prevent abuse, answer reports, deliver opted-in email and understand whether the site is useful. East Moment does not sell personal information or use private submissions to build advertising profiles.

Archived Reader Notes

Reader Notes published under the earlier participation system retain only their approved public wording, public name, optional location, article link and publication date. The intake and voting systems have been retired. You may request correction or removal of an archived note by emailing from the address originally used.

China Moments

China Moments stores your public name or alias, private email, short travel post, location details, optional visit date and the photos you upload. Photos are converted to WebP and stripped of EXIF and GPS metadata before private storage. Every post remains private until editorial approval. Public posts show only the public name, submitted story, selected location details and approved photos.

You must confirm that you took the photos. A separate optional choice allows East Moment to feature them in a related editorial article. Reader uploads are stored in a private Supabase Storage bucket and delivered through expiring signed URLs; they are not copied into Git, Vercel's filesystem or East Moment's local editorial media library.

Publication standards, prohibited content, photo rules and the correction process are explained in the Community Guidelines.

Member profiles and Moment interactions

A member profile has a permanent public username and may include a public display name, biography, general location and description of the member's relationship to China. Public profiles show approved Moment history. They never show the member's email, login history or moderation status.

A Helpful reaction stores the member and Moment identifiers so one person can react only once and remove that reaction later. Public pages show only the total count. Moment replies remain private until approval; approved replies show the public member identity, wording and date. Reports are private and store the reporter, target, selected reason and optional detail so the editorial team can investigate. East Moment does not reveal who filed a report.

Article Comments

An article comment stores your public name or alias, private email, comment and article context. Comments remain private until Lijun approves them. Approved comments show the public name, comment, date and any public reply from Lijun; your email is never published.

Analytics

Privacy-friendly Vercel Analytics may measure page traffic. Optional Google Analytics loads only after consent and measures reading behavior such as depth, engaged time, internal links, video plays and anonymous return intervals. A consented browser keeps a first-party retention profile in local storage containing visit timing, session count and the strongest participation type; it contains no name, email or form content and is removed when analytics consent is withdrawn. East Moment never sends form contents or email addresses to analytics.

Service providers and international processing

East Moment relies on service providers to run the site: Vercel for hosting and site analytics, Supabase for community records and private image storage, Resend for email delivery and, only with consent, Google Analytics. These providers process limited information needed for their role and may operate infrastructure in countries different from yours. Embedded video or social content may contact its provider when you choose to load or play it; that provider's privacy terms then apply.

Retention and deletion

East Moment keeps information only while it supports the feature, moderation record, security need or a legitimate rights dispute. Expired sign-in credentials and operational records may remain for a limited period in protected systems or backups. Because retention currently depends on the record type, East Moment does not claim a single automatic deletion period.

You may request account closure, deletion of private participation data, removal or anonymization of a published contribution, or correction of your public profile. East Moment may retain the minimum record needed to document consent, honor an opt-out, prevent abuse, protect safety or resolve a legal or rights complaint. Public copies made independently by other people are outside East Moment's control.

Your choices and requests

You can withdraw optional analytics consent through Analytics preferences in the footer, unsubscribe through any East Moment email, remove a Helpful reaction, and edit or withdraw eligible draft activity through the available community controls. For access, correction, deletion, objection or account-closure requests not available in the interface, email from the address connected to the account so ownership can be checked.

Children

East Moment is written for a general audience and is not designed to collect personal information from children acting without the permission required where they live. Do not submit identifying photographs or stories about a child unless you have appropriate authority and the publication is safe. Contact us promptly if a child's information should be reviewed or removed.

Security and limits

East Moment uses private storage, expiring media links, restricted server access and human review to reduce risk. No online service can guarantee absolute security. Please do not submit passwords, identity documents, precise home addresses or other sensitive information unless a specific verification request makes it necessary.

Removal and unsubscribe requests

You can unsubscribe through the link in an East Moment email without creating an account. You can also correct an archived Reader Note or request deletion of stored participation data at any time. Email East Moment from the address connected to the request so ownership can be confirmed.

Rules governing contributions are in the Terms of Use; content and image-rights complaints follow the Copyright and Rights Requests process.
