Reader-built field atlas

Stitch Direction Atlas

A motif names what thread depicts. A complete object beside a close detail shows where direction, density, relief and open ground make that motif physically legible.

The evidence pair

Two photographs that can be compared

Frame 1

The complete object with its edges, scale and use visible

Frame 2

A sharp detail from the same object showing thread direction, density, relief or exposed ground

What the note must add

Name the object, maker or workshop, material, place and date only when a label or first-hand record supports them. Separate what the thread visibly does from regional attribution, symbolic meaning and anything the missing reverse cannot prove.

Submissions remain private until East Moment reviews the rights, specificity and usefulness of the record.

Editorial founding evidence

A visible baseline, with the gaps left open

These are East Moment editorial records built from authorized or rights-cleared imagery. They are not reader submissions and do not count toward the public record total.

Two embroidered scales before the matched detail

Unmatched museum method baseline

Two public-domain Met photographs make different reading scales available: a complete elongated chair strip establishes object shape, while a separate embroidered badge makes changes in metallic thread, silk direction and dense coverage easier to inspect.

Long Qing embroidered chair strip with dragons, clouds and a central roundel
Visible: complete furnishing format, repeated zones and dense coverage. Missing: a matched close detail and reverse.
Embroidered Ming badge with a gold dragon and plum blossoms
Visible: local changes in thread direction and density on another object. This is not a crop from the chair strip.

Still missing: The badge is not a detail from the chair strip. The pair supplies no reverse view, living maker account, workshop record or matched close photograph, so it cannot establish one object's stitch path or regional origin.

Approved reader records

The Atlas in public

No matched object-and-stitch record has cleared review yet.

The first approved record will keep the whole object and its thread behavior together. An isolated motif or an unsupported regional label cannot complete the Atlas.
