Reader-built field atlas

Yaodong Season-Pair Atlas

One picturesque day cannot establish how an earth dwelling handles temperature, moisture, light, air and household use across time.

The evidence pair

Two photographs that can be compared

Frame 1

The complete dwelling or courtyard in one stated season or time

Frame 2

The same view or a matched functional detail after weather, light or use changes

What the note must add

Identify the yaodong form and whether the site is lived in, reused, curated or uncertain. Images cannot prove indoor temperature, air quality, safety or resident satisfaction without measurements and consented context.

Submissions remain private until East Moment reviews the rights, specificity and usefulness of the record.

Editorial founding evidence

A visible baseline, with the gaps left open

These are East Moment editorial records built from authorized or rights-cleared imagery. They are not reader submissions and do not count toward the public record total.

Shanxi earth mass and a Qingjian winter

Unmatched seasonal baseline

A Shanxi cliffside group makes earth mass and openings visible, while a Qingjian snow scene records winter exposure around another yaodong landscape.

Cliffside cave houses and barns in loess near the Wang Family Grand Courtyard
Visible: earth face, openings and exterior enclosure. Missing: a return under changed conditions.
Snowfall around yaodong dwellings in Qingjian County
Visible: winter exposure at a second site. This is not the matching season view.

Still missing: These are different places. They do not compare the same dwelling, measure indoor performance, establish occupation or document drainage and ventilation through a season.

The Atlas in public

No matched yaodong season pair has cleared review.

The Atlas begins when the same place returns under different conditions. Two attractive caves from different counties cannot substitute for time.
