A correct Chinese zodiac calculator needs your full birth date, not just your birth year. The animal changes at Chinese New Year, so a January or February birthday can belong to the previous Gregorian year's sign.
What this calculator tells you
The result gives four connected pieces of the traditional calendar:
- Animal, the familiar Rat-to-Pig identity.
- Earthly Branch, the formal position underlying that animal.
- Element, derived from the year's Heavenly Stem.
- Yin or yang, also derived from the stem.
The calculation happens in your browser. The birth date is not submitted to East Moment or stored by this tool.
Why birth year alone gives wrong answers
Chinese New Year does not occur on January 1. Its Gregorian date moves between late January and February.
Take 2026. The Horse year begins on February 17. A person born on February 10, 2026 is a Snake; a person born one week later is a Horse. A year-only calculator would label both people Horse and confidently return one wrong answer.
This is not a rare technical exception. Roughly three to seven weeks of birthdays can sit before the annual boundary. Any tool that asks only for a four-digit year is choosing convenience over accuracy.
The convention we use
East Moment changes the zodiac sign at Chinese New Year, the convention used in general family conversation, Spring Festival imagery and popular zodiac identity.
Some systems of bazi and Chinese metaphysics use Lichun, the Beginning of Spring solar term around February 3–5, as the annual boundary. That is a legitimate specialist convention. It can disagree with the Chinese New Year result for dates between the two boundaries.
Our position is simple: there is no honest “universal” calculator unless the boundary is stated. This tool answers the everyday cultural question, “What is my Chinese zodiac animal?” It does not produce a professional fate chart.
How the result is calculated
The tool compares the entered Gregorian date with that year's Chinese New Year boundary. Its 1901-2100 boundary table was checked year by year against the Hong Kong Observatory's Gregorian-Lunar Calendar Conversion Tables. The animal is then found from the repeating twelve-branch cycle. The stem supplies the yin-yang and element label.
For example, 2026 is Bing-Wu (丙午):
- Bing is the third Heavenly Stem and is associated with yang Fire.
- Wu is the seventh Earthly Branch and is paired with the Horse.
- The combined result is Yang Fire Horse.
Ten stems and twelve branches return to the same pairing every sixty years. That is why the previous Fire Horse year was 1966, even though ordinary Horse years recur every twelve years.
Read the branch carefully
The calculator's output is deliberately narrow: it identifies a calendar position, not a personality. In zodiac art, the large Chinese character beside an animal is often an Earthly Branch, not the animal's ordinary written name.

This is not a decorative difference. The branch is part of the calendar's organizing framework; the animal is its memorable visual partner. Learning both prevents the common misunderstanding that the zodiac is simply twelve animals assigned to years without a deeper time system.
What the result cannot tell you
The calculator can identify a calendrical sign. It cannot measure personality, predict luck or decide relationship compatibility.
Descriptions such as “Dragon people are ambitious” or “Snake people are mysterious” belong to popular folklore. They can be enjoyable cultural shorthand, especially in family conversations and New Year design, but millions of people born across an entire year do not share one psychology.

Dates outside the calculator range
The tool accepts dates from January 1, 1901 through December 31, 2100. A date before Chinese New Year in 1901 can correctly return the preceding 1900 Rat year, but the input range begins where the cited annual conversion tables begin. Historical Chinese calendar conversion can involve calendar standards and source-specific reconstruction. For dates outside the supported range, consult a specialist calendar rather than extending a modern algorithm and pretending the answer is certain.
That limit is deliberate. A useful cultural tool should be transparent about the convention, the calculation and the point where its confidence ends.
